Staff members were also in attendance to hand out material about the many different services available and to help folks make appointments for primary and specialty care. Use this guide to know what's worth keeping and what needs to be tossed. • DO use plastic containers with the numbers 2, 4 or 5 in the chasing-arrow recycling symbol on the bottom of a container. • DO use number 1 plastics sparingly; they can leach the heavy metal antimony if exposed to excessive heat (for instance, in your car on a hot day). • DON'T buy plastics labeled with the numbers 3 or 6, which contain known or suspected carcinogens, or the number 7, which may contain bisphenol A (BPA). Animal studies have linked BPA to obesity, diabetes, certain cancers and early puberty. • DO avoid plastics labeled "BPA-free" (also labeled number 7). Early research suggests they may contain replacement chemicals with many of BPA's health risks. • DO replace any plastic container that gets cloudy. • DON'T microwave food in any plastic; use a glass or ceramic dish instead. • DON'T run plastics through the dishwasher; the heat and abrasive detergents cause them to deteriorate more quickly.
