This issue features several stories that we hope will be a resource for you in the care of your patients. In the Washington, DC, area, three out of 1,000 children have severe hearing loss, which can impede social and cognitive development. This issue highlights our experience in performing cochlear implantations for children as young as 7 months. Through this early intervention, Children's National helps young patients with profound hearing loss overcome potentially life-defining barriers. In this issue, we also spotlight tailored treatment plans from our WISH Clinic (Wetting, Infections, and Stooling Help) that successfully resolve recurrent urinary tract infections and wetting problems. Additionally, as we enter flu season, we've included a timely reminder to all pediatricians on the importance of limiting exposure of infectious disease in the office setting by Roberta DeBiasi, MD, Division Chief of Infectious Disease. Finally, I'm happy to announce that our new Referring Physician Access Line is now operational. The access line is a resource developed specifically for you, in response to your suggestions and recommendations. The line is managed by physician-devoted staff specially trained to handle your requests for consults, appointments, and inpatient reports. I'm confident this access line will enhance our ability to support your practice and help you secure the best of care for your patients. I know we share a common commitment to the health of children in our region, today and tomorrow. We value your partnership and ask that you continue to let us know how we can serve you and your patients more effectively. Sincerely, Kurt Newman, MD WISH CLINIC The WISH Clinic at Children's National is dedicated to resolving recurrent urinary tract infections and wetting problems in children. INFECTION CONTROL Recognizing and reacting to the signs of an infectious patient in a practice setting could keep other pediatric patients from experiencing serious illness. 14 10 PALLIATIVE CARE The unique PANDA Palliative Care Program at Children's National provides comfort and support to young patients facing advanced illness. 15 Occurring in about 1 percent of the population, disorders of sex development (DSD) can be a life- changing diagnosis for children and their families. 6 SEX DEVELOPMENT EMAIL PHONE VIDEO RESEARCH WEB RESOURCES Interested in receiving Advancing Pediatrics digitally?
