KISHPROGRAMS.ORG FATIGUE THAT BECOMES severe or is accompanied by mood changes, however, could signal seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression. SAD often strikes during late fall and winter months and commonly affects younger adults who live in northern states. According to the National Institutes of Health, symptoms of SAD include fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, loss of motivation or interest in activities, irritability, and feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and anxiety. "Seasonal affective disorder often occurs because it's cold and dark and people feel like spending more sedentary time at home," says Christine Valentine, nurse practitioner at the KishHealth System Center for Family Health in Malta. "People also tend to increase their carbohydrate intake during the winter, which can lead to weight gain and affect self-esteem." To prevent SAD symptoms, Valentine recommends making time for daily exercise to boost energy levels. Avoiding caffeinated beverages at dinner and keeping a regular sleep schedule can also help improve insomnia. If you feel depressed or if your fatigue is severe enough to interfere with your daily routine, speak with your doctor about light therapy, a treatment for SAD that typically involves sitting next to a bright light box for 30 minutes daily.
