ACCORDING TO THE Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20 percent of adults 55 and older face mental and emotional challenges such as anxiety and depression as they age. But there are ways to combat the negative conditions that may arise during the golden years. "Over time, most people experience almost every kind of loss possible—loss of physical agility, financial security, independence, family members, or a spouse," says Terri Schade, clinical social worker, a counselor on staff at KishHealth System. "These losses trigger painful emotions at a time when stamina is low." The Power of Improving Your Outlook According to Schade, gratitude is one of the most powerful tools for combating the emotional consequences of loss and aging, although looking on the bright side can be a challenging habit to start. "It's never too soon to begin cultivating optimism, appreciation, and a sense of humor," Schade says. "Laughter creates mental lightness and a sense of social connection. The positive physical effects can be felt in every system of the body." Hobbies, regular exercise, and time with family and friends can also help boost your spirits. When It's Time For Help Some cases of depression need to be treated with more than positivity. If the following symptoms persist for two weeks or longer, see a doctor: • altered eating and sleep habits • excessive crying • fatigue • irritability • physical pain • suicidal thoughts KishHealth System's Behavioral Health Services is just a phone call away.
