Our History BURGER KING® co-founder James W. McLamore's philosophy of giving back to his community and the institutions that helped develop him along the way inspired the creation of the BURGER KING® a decade ago. Philanthropy Timeline 1996 Passing of co-founder James W. McLamore Scholars Program AS A YOUNG CHILD, Jim, as he was lovingly referred to by his family and friends, was no stranger to hardship. The Great Depression forced his family to spend their dwindling savings on the bare basics, making access to a good education a luxury. During these difficult times, McLamore was fortunate enough to have people who helped him achieve his educational and professional goals, and as a result, he became one of the founders of the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. McLamore believed in community service and philanthropy and had a vision to build brighter futures by promoting education in our communities. The merger of the BURGER KING® McLamore Foundation and the HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation in 2005 allowed McLamore's vision to come to fruition by enabling the BURGER KING® system to make a greater impact in the communities it serves. In celebration of the program's 10th anniversary in 2010, scholarships were made available, for the first time, to BURGER KING® employees and their children, in addition to high school seniors. Scholarship recipients were also provided with more choices on how to use their funds, including two- and four-year degrees, technical and vocational studies, and accounting and business classes to increase competency at work. In support of the various scholarship opportunities provided through The HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation, the McLamore Family Foundation has established a new category within the BURGER KING® Scholars Program called The James W. McLamore - WHOPPER™ Scholarship Award. This exciting new scholarship will award three recipients each $50,000. These four-year scholarships will help students achieve their educational and professional goals and will keep Jim McLamore's vision alive. We thank the McLamore Family and the McLamore Family Foundation for their continued support.
