New Not-for-Profit Psychiatric Hospital in Pierce County Would Increase Access to Mental Health Care In December, CHI Franciscan Health and MultiCare Health System partnered to propose a $41 million, 120-bed psychiatric hospital to be located in Tacoma. The plan for this joint venture was formed in response to an increasing need to provide mental health services in Pierce County and surrounding areas. With only 2.8 beds per 100,000 residents—compared to 14.2 statewide and 27.1 in King County— Pierce County lags behind others in terms of inpatient psychiatric capacity. The preferred site for the new hospital is at MultiCare's Allenmore Hospital campus in Tacoma. The Washington State Department of Health is currently assessing community need for this new facility. It is anticipated that state review could be completed by fall 2015 and the new hospital could begin caring for patients in 2018. "Providing appropriate facilities for those in mental crisis ensures they receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time, while also reducing overcrowding and wait times in hospital emergency rooms," said Kathy Bressler, CHI Franciscan Health executive for mental health services and president of St. Clare Hospital. "Our goal is for all patients to receive the appropriate, attentive care they need."
