CHI FRANCISCAN HEALTH /// chifranciscan.org 4 LAST FALL, CHI Franciscan Health marked the one-year anniversary of Franciscan Virtual Urgent Care, a health care service that allows patients in Franciscan's service area to receive care 24/7 from board-certified doctors and nurse practitioners via phone or video chat. In its first year, the Virtual Urgent Care prog ram has at tracted hundreds of people f rom all over t he Puget Sound. Patients who have used t he ser v ice mention t he ease, convenience and af fordable cost of Vir t ual Urgent Care as its top benef its. At $35 per v isit, Vir t ual Urgent Care is less t han t he cost of an average of f ice v isit and a f raction of t he average cost of an emergenc y room v isit. One of the first hospital systems in the U.S. to provide wide- scale virtual urgent care services, CHI Franciscan estimates that Virtual Urgent Care has helped patients avoid more than $600,000 in health care costs and saved patients more than 4,200 hours compared to the time and money spent seeking care at an emergency department, urgent care or primary care provider or clinic. "We're thrilled with the success of Virtual Urgent Care over the past year," said Mark Adams, MD, chief medical officer, CHI Franciscan Health. "As our health care system becomes more consumer-driven, we're proud to be among those taking the lead in giving patients more control over how, when and where they access care. It fits perfectly into our mission to create healthier communities in the Puget Sound area." Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with one in eight developing the disease in her lifetime. Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Research shows patients cared for by gynecologic oncologists have twice the survival rates of those not treated by a cancer specialist. St. Anthony Hospital is pleased to welcome two new surgeons to the area who care for women with cancer. Michael Bidus, MD, specializes in gynecologic oncology with an emphasis on ovarian and endometrial cancer. General surgeon Cathy Baker, DO, joins Linda Pai, MD, in offering surgical expertise in the treatment of breast cancer in Gig Harbor and Silverdale. All three surgeons have offices in Gig Harbor conveniently located in the Milgard Medical Pavilion on the St. Anthony Hospital campus. They plan to partner with the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Center to offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.
