ERNEST HEMINGWAY, AMERICAN AUTHOR and journalist, took his own life at his Ketchum, Idaho, home three months before Mariel was born. From an early age, Mariel knew her family legacy— beginning with her famous grandfather —was both celebrated and sad. As she began to learn more about what some call the Hemingway "curse," she also learned more about herself. Now she gives presentations throughout the country to shed light on the topic of mental illness. Mariel will speak about surviving her family's battles with mental illness and suicide during An Evening with Mariel Hemingway in October. The event is sponsored by 3D Community Health: Body.Mind. Spirit—a service line of HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph's hospitals. 'RUNNING FROM CRAZY'. As a young child, Mariel knew her family members were viewed as celebrities, but she wasn't aware of the turmoil under the surface. "I understood the family that I came from. But I didn't really understand the depths of the issues of my family until looking back at it later in life," Mariel says. "I didn't really understand everyone's real struggle and pain until I was in my 30s and 40s. I started digging in then." Mariel has counted seven suicides in her family, and she has other family members with mental illness and addictions. She personally has a history of addiction to drugs and alcohol. MARIEL HEMINGWAY: SUICIDE AND FAMILY AT THE AGE OF 53, MARIEL HEMINGWAY IS FEEDING HER SOUL WITH EXERCISE, MEDITATION, AND YOGA. BUT NOT LONG AGO, THE ACTRESS, WRITER, MOTHER, AND GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE FAMOUS ERNEST HEMINGWAY WAS CAPTURED BY FEAR—THE FEAR OF MENTAL ILLNESS. 4 I N S P I R I N G H E A LT H
