focus on health ::: award ::: A STROKE OCCU R S when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood in the brain. When brain cells are deprived of oxygen, they begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency that affects one person every 40 seconds and is the fifth leading cause of death in the US. Some risk factors cannot be controlled. For example, you are more likely to have a stroke if you are older than age 55 or have a family history of stroke. Women are more likely to have a stroke and are more likely to die from one. Controllable risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, heart disease and diabetes.
