A STROKE OCCU R S when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood in the brain.
When brain cells are deprived of oxygen, they begin to die. A stroke is a medical
emergency that affects one person every 40 seconds and is the fifth leading
cause of death in the US.
Some risk factors cannot be controlled. For example, you are more likely
to have a stroke if you are older than age 55 or have a family history of stroke.
Women are more likely to have a stroke and are more likely to die from one.
Controllable risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, heart disease
and diabetes.
Faster Care, Better Outcomes
If you do have a stroke, being treated in a timely manner is vital for
your survival and recovery. In 2014, Glen Cove Hospital received the

implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American
Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke
patients. Get With the Guidelines-Stroke helps hospitals identify the best
research-based guidelines to improve stroke outcomes, including:
• Faster recovery times
• Lower rates of death and disability
• Improved quality of life
Glen Cove Hospital was also recognized on the associations' Target: Stroke
Honor Roll for reducing the time between hospital arrival and treatment with
clot-busting medication.

Stroke Care
Is It a Stroke?
During a stroke, time
is a critical factor
for proper treatment
and recovery. Quickly
identifying whether or
not someone is having
a stroke can make the
difference between life
and death. The National
Stroke Association
urges everyone to think
'FAST' during a stroke:
FACE. Is one side
of the mouth or face
drooping?
ARMS. Hold both
arms up. Does one drift
downward?
SPEECH. Is speech
slurred or difficult to
understand?
TIME. If you suspect
a stroke, call 911
immediately.
