Let's Talk On Friday, Sept. 25, the day before the Expo, Taste of Home magazine's Cooking School Live will take place at the Huron Event Center at 6:30 p.m. General admission is $15, and VIP ticket options are available. In addition to the live cooking show that will feature approximately 10 healthy recipes, there will be wine tasting and kitchen- and cooking-related booths. During the Expo, KSFY News anchor Courtney Collen will join the winner of the Recipe Rehab contest in a live cooking demonstration of a healthier version of a favorite recipe on the Healthy Huron Stage. Area residents were invited to submit recipes in August. Collen, who will also emcee the Taste of Home Cooking School Live and SD Women's Expo, will choose the winning recipe based on several criteria, including taste, nutritional content and ease of preparation. Watch for details on the winner and the time for the Cooking with Courtney presentation. Dedicated to helping women put the focus back on their own health, Huron Regional Medical Center and the SD Women's Expo have revamped the healthcare portion of the annual event. Two COOKING SCHOOLS About When HRMC first began hosting "A Day for Women" in October 2000, there were approximately 150 attendees. Years later, after partnering with the SD State Fair to create the SD Women's Expo, which will be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 26, on the SD State Fairgrounds, HRMC expects more than 1,000 women to attend the event. "Our focus has always been to help women learn ways to improve their own health and the health of their families," says Kim Rieger, vice president of marketing for HRMC and member of the SD Women's Expo planning committee. "As we were planning this year, we thought it was a good time to completely change things up to keep Expo attendees interested and coming to learn the valuable information presented by our healthcare providers and community partners." This year, women are invited to take "a healthy stroll" through the Arts and Education building, where they will find interactive information on topics like common women's health issues, car seat safety, infant crying, breast cancer and more. Free health screenings will also be offered, along with short demonstrations on how to incorporate healthy choices into a woman's busy life. "New this year, we will include a survivor element to the medical presentations," Rieger says. "Instead of offering several smaller medical presentations, we will offer two slightly longer presentations featuring personal stories from women who have experienced health issues, along with their providers, who will share information to help the audience identify signs, symptoms and treatment options." How Do I Attend? General admission tickets are $10 for the Expo and $15 for the Taste of Home Cooking School Live (see details below) and are available at these locations: HRMC information desks, the State Fair office, East River Nursery, Prostrollo Motor Sales, Coborn's Super Store and the SD Women's Expo website.
