Dear Friends and Neighbors, THIS PAST SUMMER, you likely heard a lot in the news about healthcare, which is not unusual, considering all the changes taking place in the industry right now. Hospitals are trying to adapt to these changes quickly, but there are always challenges and constraints when dealing with the shifts we're experiencing today. One positive change we're seeing is a transition from a fee-for-service to a pay-for-performance model. Basically, that means we're increasing our focus on keeping people well. In order to do that, we are developing programs at King's Daughters' Health to better focus on prevention. For instance, our certified diabetes educator helps patients with diabetes manage their condition so they can prevent some of the other illnesses and problems that can result from poorly controlled diabetes. We've also partnered with the state to offer smoking cessation programs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Indiana, killing almost 4,000 Hoosiers each year, and Indiana's adult smoking rate is higher than the national average. The wellness and prevention programs we're instituting at KDH will benefit so many members of our community. Of course, such programs come at a cost, and as the industry changes and adapts, we must cope with declining reimbursement rates. That's why I'm exceedingly grateful for the work of the KDH Foundation, which has stepped up to provide funds for a number of improvements at the hospital, including our new Cancer Treatment Center, which now provides world- class cancer care to Madison and the surrounding areas. You can read about the Foundation, and learn how to support it, on pages 4 and 5. At KDH, we are committed to limiting the financial impact of a major diagnosis. We've been able to improve our pricing and the accuracy of estimates we give to patients for various treatments and procedures. We're also excited to work with the state on promoting the Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0, which has provided access to healthcare coverage for local residents who previously could not afford it. Many more changes are underway that will ultimately benefit everyone we serve, and I certainly hope that you continue to turn to KDH whether you're in need of treatment or simply looking for ways to live a healthier, more fulfilling life. Wishing you wellness, Carol Dozier President and CEO, King's Daughters' Health 2 FALL 2015 // www.kdhmadison.org
