PREVENTION Is Closer Than You THINK Preventive screenings are key to detecting harmful, life-threatening diseases in time to treat them successfully. Fortunately, you can get the screenings you need close to home at Rhea Medical Center. "TAKING AN ACTIVE role in your own health care and scheduling preventive screenings can save you from costly treatments and prolong your life," says Tracy Reed, RN, BSN, MBA, Chief Nursing Officer at Rhea Medical Center. "You don't have to drive to Chattanooga to undergo important screenings. We offer quality, standardized techniques and equipment right here in Rhea County." Preventive screenings are frequently covered by insurance companies, so you should Tracy Reed, RN, BSN, MBA talk to your physician about which screenings are right for you and when you should have them. RMC has capabilities to screen for many health problems, such as: BREAST CANCER—According to the American Cancer Society, women should have annual mammograms once they reach age 40. RMC is equipped with digital mammography, the highest-standard equipment for detecting breast cancer. CHOLESTEROL—The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends having a lipid profile every five years to screen for high cholesterol, which can cause a buildup of plaque in the arteries and lead to a heart attack. COLORECTAL CANCER—Men and women should have a colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50 to screen for cancer or precancerous polyps. RMC has five physicians who perform this quick outpatient procedure. BLOOD PRESSURE— Adults ages 18 and older should see their physicians for yearly physicals and be screened for high blood pressure. OSTEOPOROSIS—Women older than 65 can suffer from weak, fragile bones that could put them at risk for a fracture. A dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan is a simple test that measures bone density to look for osteoporosis. OF COURSE, ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FIRST.
