Q. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT, AND WHAT IMPEDES IT? A. I see functional movement simply as the proper patterning of the body to move through everyday life. Many conditions can compromise movement, including broken bones, pain-related injuries or even obesity. Q. FOR JOINT ASSESSMENT, WHICH CONDITION IS EASIEST TO DETECT? A. Knee issues are easier to identify because they will start to form a dysfunctional pattern by moving inward. Body squats help us locate the problem area. We then work to ensure functional movement returns before addressing other aspects of an individual's fitness plan. Hip and shoulder issues are both trickier to detect. When further assessment or medical care is needed, we refer our clients to Altru Advanced Orthopedics' medical experts. Q. HOW DO FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREENS WORK? A. Functional screens are full-body scans that help our performance specialists build successful individualized fitness plans. They include deep squats, a hip flexion test, in-line lunges, push-ups and leg raises, along with shoulder and back exercises. Q. WHY DID ALTRU ADVANCED ORTHOPEDICS DECIDE TO PARTNER WITH EXOS? A. EXOS is focused on optimizing human performance through four key pillars: movement, mindset, nutrition and recovery. They allow clients to improve overall health and wellness, which aligns with Altru's mission to improve health and enrich life. Together, we are helping those in our community be at their best; pain-free, active and healthy. We celebrated a grand opening in September at Altru Professional Center and we continue to build excitement about our program in the community. Q. WHAT KEY ADVICE COULD YOU OFFER READERS ABOUT MAINTAINING BODY FUNCTION? A. Move well and move often. Embrace EXOS' motto to live like every day is game day. Altru Advanced Orthopedics offers elite training and injury prevention through a partnership with EXOS, a nationally renowned athletic training and human performance institute.
