ANTONIOS SELECTED AS REGIONAL ICD-10 EXPERT Sam Antonios, MD, has been selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help area medical practices make the transition to ICD-10. ICD-10 is a classification system imple- mented by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 to replace ICD-9, which the WHO developed in the 1970s. Accounting for modern advances in clinical treatment and medical devices, ICD-10 codes offer many more classification options than those found in predecessor ICD-9. U.S. healthcare regulators began requiring ICD-10 compliance on Oct. 1. "Making the conversion can seem daunting, so it's important that physicians know there are people who can assist and guide them," says Dr. Antonios, Via Christi Health's Director of Information Systems. Dr. Antonios is volunteering his time to assist practices in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa because he believes that peer-to-peer discussions with other physicians can improve readiness. "It's not an easy topic for physicians, but it's an important one be- cause if your practice is not ready, you won't be able to submit claims," he says. "That's an immediate cash-flow problem." Via Christi began preparing for ICD-10 changes in 2013. CMS has recruited volunteers such as Dr. Antonios to help smaller practices that may be struggling with ICD-10 conversion. "I don't want physicians to close their practices because they weren't ready," Dr. Antonios says. "So many of our patients depend on small- to medium-sized physician practices for their care." WESLEY MEDICAL CENTER EARNS RECOGNITION FROM JOINT COMMISSION Wesley Medical Center has once again been named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. Wesley was recognized as part of The Joint Commission's 2015 annual report "America's Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety" for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability- measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneu- monia, surgical care, children's asthma, stroke and prenatal care. Wesley is one of only 1,043 hospitals out of more than 3,300 eligible hospitals in the United States to achieve the Top Performer distinction. The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improv- ing performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions. The recognition program's performance-measure categories include heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgi- cal care, children's asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, stroke, venous thromboembolism, perinatal care, immunization, tobacco treatment and substance use.
