Celebrating the Mother/Daughter Bond In partnership with HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital, 5ive for Women is hosting its first event designed exclusively for mothers and daughters ages 12 to 18 to connect. The Take 5ive with Your Daughter: Pause Pamper and Retreat will take place on May 7 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at Metropolis Resort. Ladies and young women will spend the day engaged in spa-like activities, such as make-up sessions, massages, and pedicures. Bonding time includes rock wall team building, rise & shine yoga and power walking. The one-day retreat will include a communication workshop to help mothers and daughters identify their preferred communication styles and explore how to interact with one another based on their individual personalities. "We want to offer mothers and daughters a time to nurture their relationships without interruptions," says Jen Theisen, Editor of 5ive for Women magazine. "Our daughters face new challenges daily, and they need a safe place to land and feel comfortable sharing with their mothers." For more information or to register for the event, contact Jen Theisen at jen@5iveforwomen.com. CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS Though it may be most difficult to talk with your teen when she is struggling with problems at school or with friends, these are often times when your child needs the most support from family. Not addressing important issues may lead to her engaging in harmful behavior. Some of the signs that your child may be internalizing personal problems include: ✳ Insomnia or sleeping too much ✳ Irritability ✳ Poor performance in school ✳ Self-destructive behaviors, such as drinking, smoking, or not eating properly ✳ Unusual sadness ✳ Withdrawal from loved ones and disinterest in activities If you notice some of these warning signs but are having trouble getting your child to open up, a professional counselor may help you work through certain circumstances together. "Therapy can help families develop effective communication skills, such as active listening, openness, and respect," Gronemus says. "Counseling can also help people process underlying issues that may lead to communication roadblocks, such as trauma and other unhealthy experiences. Once this process is in motion, families can work together to formulate solutions and maintain strong, nurturing communication throughout life."
