658 658 MOSQUITO BITES Mosquitoes are the deadliest creatures on the planet, being responsible for nearly one million deaths per year due to malaria infections. 1 2 ASTHMA An increase in ozone levels due to high heat and humidity, traffic-related pollution, etc., is known to exacerbate asthma complications in the summer. DROWNING Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages one to four, and is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death among children ages five to nine. HEATSTROKE Heat kills an average of 658 people per year in the United States. POISON IVY About 85 percent of the population is allergic to poison ivy, poison sumac or poison oak, making it the most common allergic reaction in the United States, affecting nearly 50 million Americans each year. 3 4 5 DEHYDRATION It's important to stay hydrated, especially on hot summer days. You can figure out how much water your body needs per day to stay hydrated by dividing your weight in half and converting that to ounces. So if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink 80 ounces of water per day, or 10 8-ounce glasses. 6 FOOD POISONING Food poisoning is prevalent at summer barbecues and picnics due to food such as potato salad being left out for long periods of time. Food left unrefrigerated for more than two hours may not be safe to eat. Above 90°F, food should not be left out more than one hour. 7 8 ➦ Facts about Summer Medical Conditions BEE STINGS If they're not allergic, the average person can endure 10 bee stings per one pound of body weight.
