A Total Recovery Sister Charlene Grossman of Fergus Falls chose CHI St.Francis Health for her healing from kneereplacement. A former chaplain who worked in addiction recovery, Sister Charlene decided in the summer of 2015 that her knee pain was too much to bear. Although she enjoyed an active lifestyle, she was having trouble shopping and getting around without discomfort. She had her rst total joint replacement in July 2015, and the second on the other knee in January 2016. After both surgeries, Sister Charlene came to CHISt.Francis Health for her recovery. Building Condence and Strength Sister Charlene started her recovery in the swing bed program at CHISt. Francis Health. The swing bed program provides 24-hour skilled nursing care delivered in an acute setting. For Sister Charlene, this meant getting comfortable moving around on her own before she went to a friend's home to recover fully. "We worked on getting up and down stairs and walking comfortably," says Casey Hansen, PT, DPT, sta physical therapist at CHI St. Francis Health. "As physical therapists, our job is to guide people along. Especially after a joint replacement, most people are hesitant to do things, but the new joint is solid right after surgery. Therapy is about building condence." Sister Charlene is a sister of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, the order that started St. Francis more than 100 years ago—so she knows the connection the hospital has with healing the whole person. "I knew my physical needs would be met, but it was important that my emotional and spiritual needs were met, too," Sister Charlene says. "I received excellent care from all the services I needed—nursing care, nutrition and dietary sta, and the rehabilitation professionals. I was shown kindness and compassion from everyone from the receptionist to my physicaltherapist." To learn more about rehabilitation at CHI St. Francis Health, visit www.sfcare.org.
