President's Message… With summer in full swing and everyone enjoying outdoor activities comes an increase in sun exposure, so the proper precautions need to be undertaken in order to protect the skin. According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, and it accounts for almost half of the cancer cases in the United States. By all means, we at CentraState encourage participation in the many outdoor activities that the warm summer weather has to offer, such as running, hiking, team sports, swimming, kayaking, or just a simple walk. But although it is an understandably easy thing to forget when you just want to get outside as soon as possible, you need to be mindful about shielding your skin at all times. Clothing that covers as much area as possible (without overheating your body) and sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher are necessities to defend yourself against harmful damage from the sun. If you believe you're at risk for skin cancer due to sun exposure or other factors, early detection—as with all cancers—is critical. That is why CentraState provides the MoleSafe advanced skin cancer detection service at the Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus. Anyone who is worried about contracting skin cancer can receive a thorough MoleSafe diagnosis to determine the condition of their skin with exceptional accuracy with a digital melanogram produced by digital imaging and dermoscopy scans. You can read more about a MoleSafe success story on page 8. We hope you have a safe and healthy summer. Yours in Good Health, John T. Community Voices… Dear Mr. Gribbin, Four years ago, I attended the 12-week program for MS (multiple sclerosis). This year, I'm taking the graduate class for strength and balance and also the stationary bike riding class. I was diagnosed 24 years ago with this devastating disease. I have seen many different therapists during my years of declining health, but I never experienced anyone like Diane Baum! I believe the Fitness and Wellness Center is very fortunate to have Diane's expertise and knowledge of this horrible disease. As for myself, I am a miracle! When I began the 12-week classes, I was only a few weeks out of my wheelchair. Soon, I was able to walk using a walker. Presently, I use a cane, and I don't always need it. When people whom I haven't seen for a while see me, they are totally shocked at seeing this fantastic improvement before their eyes. Everyone wants to know what happened. My answer: Diane! Diane Baum In all honesty, I had to tell you that all credit is due to Diane's classes. I'll be forever grateful for finding this wonderful and knowledgeable person who really can understand the disease and the toll it takes on people. Please, please, please keep Diane on the staff! I have never in my entire life (60 years) felt this good, ever! My body is responding to all of the exercises Diane is having me do. Thank God my MS stopped progressing, and in fact has reversed! Sincerely, Suzanne C. Kelly Manalapan
