HOLIDAYS MAY DAMPEN your mood, and that's okay. Maybe you are dealing with nonstop illness, or perhaps you can't stop thinking about previous traditions you shared with someone who has passed. "Seniors who are grieving the loss of a loved one may isolate themselves simply because they lack the energy to deal with the extra tasks, like shopping, sending cards, and attending seasonal concerts and parties," says Amy Segerstrom, MS, LPC, Coordinator of The Healing Place, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital's center for counseling and group support. "If grief is a challenge during the winter months, come to The Healing Place. We can help." SOAK UP RAYS OF JOY At The Healing Place, we offer individual counseling on a short-term basis, along with ongoing programs and seasonal programs, such as Grief and the Holidays, where we walk with others through transitions, including grief or illness. If you just need a boost, our Living Mindfully class focuses on finding gratitude. It is good for the soul, but so is time outside. "Winter is beautiful in Wisconsin," Segerstrom says. "It doesn't have to be something you dread. Venture outside, even if it's just to make your way to us— that counts in our book." 1. Start small. Rome wasn't built in a day. Your home gym doesn't have to be, either. Start with simple things, such as a jump rope for cardio, and only add items you know you'll use. 2. Use what you have. Instead of dropping a lot of money on expensive weights, look for things to lift around the house. Cans of soup or jugs of laundry detergent can stand in for dumbbells. 3. Ditch the equipment. There are plenty of exercises, such as push-ups, yoga, running, and jumping jacks, you can do without any equipment. 4. Look for deals. Wait for gear to go on sale, shop yard sales, and check out secondhand shops for fitness equipment. 5. Think about your lifestyle. "When you choose items for your gym, think about how you'll use them," says Courtney Reynolds, CCRP, Exercise Specialist with HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation. "If you love a certain show, set up a television in your workout space. If you like working out with friends, pick a spot with room for two or three to join you." 3 S A C R E D H E A R T E A U C L A I R E . O R G
