HEALTH ECONOMIS TS AT Harvard University, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Columbia University and the
University of Chicago have shown that patients who selected
better hospitals made significant heart attack survival gains,
adding to a body of research highlighting the connection
between clinical measures of quality and patient satisfaction.
Patient satisfaction is associated with lower mortality and
readmission rates, as well as better surgical quality. With
Medicare's Hospital Compare, patients are able to research
hospitals' mortality and readmission rates as well as the
timeliness and effectiveness of care. Notably, it also rates patient
satisfaction, using the Hospital Consumer Assessment
of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. e survey is an
assessment of recently discharged patients that asks for their
feedback on topics related to hospital quality, such as how well
their doctors and nurses communicated with patients and how
well their pain was managed. Based on these criteria:
+ 83 percent of patients reported that nurses at UMC always
communicated well
+ 81 percent reported that doctors always communicated well
+ 75 percent of patients reported they received help as soon
as they wanted it, and 76 percent said that their pain was
always well controlled
Overall, UMC earned four out of five stars based on patient
survey results.
MEDICARE'S HOSPITAL COMPARE HAS MADE IT EASY FOR PATIENTS TO CHOOSE
A QUALIT Y HOSPITAL — AND UMC HEALTH SYSTEM RANKS HIGH.
