Outcomes in Action PEOPLE PARTICIPATE IN THE LIFE OF THE COMMUNITY Ray was asked if he would like to give back to his community by having a fundraiser for our local animal shelter, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. When asking Ray if he'd be interested, sta mentioned there would be at least three dogs to help him with this project. Ray shook his head yes with a huge smile on his face. Ray found the perfect picture of himself and a dog and made a yer. He sent the yer out and hung it at local businesses. On the day of the fundraiser, Ray was excited and ready to give back to the community through his passion for animals. Ray raised money and collected a lot of supplies for the shelter. Ray enjoyed hanging out with the dogs and meeting new people. The co-founder for 4 Luv of Dog Rescue came and thanked Ray for his generosity in helping the shelter and told him she would love to see him participate in future events. Ray would like this to be an annual event for him and our local animal shelter. Ray is very proud of himself! PEOPLE PERFORM DIFFERENT SOCIAL ROLES The smell of freshly popped popcorn and butter lls the break room of the Sanford Annex building in downtown Fargo. Cynthia sits at one of the tables by the popcorn machine, and as the employees walk in, she greets them with a bag of popcorn to brighten their day. For the past year, Cynthia has been volunteering at Sanford popping popcorn. She has recently begun taking payments and is now working on giving change back to the customers. Cynthia is an active lady and isn't quite ready to "retire." Jenny (Cynthia's sta ) assisted Cynthia with looking into dierent kinds of volunteer opportunities after she left her long-term employment at Olive Garden. After many trials, Cynthia felt at home volunteering at Sanford. The employees seem to enjoy her service as they always come with a smile and leave with a smileā€¦and don't forget the bag of warm fresh popcorn. As time goes on, Cynthia plans to be more involved in the whole process of the popcorn making. She hopes to use some adaptive equipment to assist with pouring the butter and scooping the kernels more independently. For Cynthia, it's all one day at a time, one step at a time, and she is loving every moment of it. PEOPLE ARE CONNECTED TO NATURAL SUPPORT NETWORKS It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon last August when there was a knock on the door at Brad's home. A woman and her three children stood at the door. She said she was Brad's sister and was hoping she and her family could visit with him. Brad was putting pictures in a photo album at the kitchen table. When Brad's family walked in, he lit up with a smile from ear to ear. The family sat down at the kitchen table and gave him a chocolate shake from DQ. They started looking at pictures and helping him with his photo album, while talking about family memories. Brad's sister and his two nieces and nephew were all laughing and really enjoying their visit. Before they left, they took a family picture outside of Brad's house. His sister told him she would be back to see him again as she wanted to start having more time with him. Brad's sister visited again shortly after and brought donuts to treat everyone for all they do to assist Brad. The family then came over to see Brad again and brought him Christmas gifts and a birthday gift (for his Decemberbirthday). Brad has since gone to one of his nephew's Mayville hockey games with his sister, brother-in- law, and nieces. He had a blast. They took another family picture at the hockey game. Brad also found out he has a half-sister who also has since been in contact with Brad and his sister. This year has been so very dierent for Brad. He sees his family on a regular basis now and is so proud of them that he displays his pictures in his home. CHI FRIENDSHIP /// www.chifriendship.com 10
