Meet Dr. Oakley Michael Oakley, MD, general surgeon with St. Lawrence Surgery, is fulfilling a dream by working in the North Country. AS A GENERAL SURGEON, Dr. Oakley performs many procedures, including: • Colonoscopy—screening for colon cancer • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) to evaluate the esophagus and stomach) • Breast surgery and biopsies • Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries including gallbladder, appendix, and colon procedures • Hernia surgery • Thyroid biopsy and surgery • Hemorrhoid procedures • Vein procedures for reux and varicose Dr. Oakley also provides vascular dialysis access for patients who will be undergoing hemodialysis. With this procedure, he connects an artery and a vein to create a stula that allows for an access point for dialysis. Dr. Oakley completed his residency at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, and his professional relationships allow for easy consultation and referral when needed. AN EDUCATION FOR LIFE Before completing his surgical residency, Dr. Oakley earned his medical degree from the Oregon Health & Michael Oakley, MD Science University in Portland. Although he never imagined himself living in New York state, he found it was the perfect opportunity to work in a local community. "In Oregon, I had a strong exposure to rural medicine, especially in my third and fourth years of medical school," Dr. Oakley says. "When I came to Syracuse for my residency, I wanted to look for opportunities to mirror that. After speaking with the residency program director, I was put in touch with Dr. Brandy [Kiri Brandy, MD, general surgeon with St.Lawrence Surgery], a recent graduate of the program. Dr.Brandy was gracious enough to host me during my second year of residency, and I greatly enjoyed my timehere." After completing his surgical residency in 2016, Dr. Oakley joined the practice. When he's not seeing patients, Dr. Oakley enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Sarah, and their daughters Sola and Remi. Hiking, climbing, and boating are three of their favorite activities. I like taking care of the whole picture, rather than getting super-specialized and stuck doing one component. Joining St. Lawrence Surgery is a wonderful opportunity to do exactly what I wanted to do. I can care for a variety of problems and be a part of the community, which isn't possible in a city where you're only one of many folks. My wife and I wanted a nice community to raise our children, as well as a mountain range for outdoor activities, and the North Country provides all those things for us. It's a hidden gem." —Michael Oakley, MD, general surgeon with St. Lawrence Surgery Michael Oakley, MD 3 Tomorrow is worth defending. L I V I N G W E L L
