Thank You! The CHI St. Francis Health Foundation extends a warm "Thanks!" to CHI St. Francis Health employees, our wonderful team of volunteers, local businesses, and community members. The 2016 Harvest Fest wouldn't have been possible without your support. Hometown Heroes in Action The morning of April 4, 2016, was one of promise for Kip Christensen. Following the workday, the Econo Wine and Spirits and Chuck's Off Sale manager was looking forward to connecting with friends and attending the Minnesota Twins opening game against the Baltimore Orioles. Fate, however, had other plans. While driving to Chuck's Off Sale in Wahpeton to relieve a coworker, Kip began sweating profusely. His arms felt heavy, and within 10 minutes, his vision blurred and he started having trouble speaking. Kip was rushed to CHI St. Francis Health, and his wife, Laurie, was notified that she needed to come to the hospital immediately. She arrived at CHI St. Francis Health to news she never thought she'd hear: Her husband was having a heart attack. The CHI St. Francis Health Emergency Department team administered medication to stabilize Kip for transfer. He was then moved to Sanford Health in Fargo, where physicians placed a stent to re-establish blood flow through the blocked artery responsible for his heart attack. Kip's procedure went well, which Craig Kouba, MD, the physician who treated Kip in Fargo, credits in large part to the emergency care Kip received at CHI St. Francis Health. "Dr. Kouba told me, 'CHI St. Francis Health saved your husband's life,'" Laurie says. "I will be forever grateful to the staff at CHI St. Francis Health. Breckenridge, Wahpeton, and all of the surrounding towns are so fortunate to have this hospital here to serve us." Bringing Skilled Providers to Our Community The CHI St. Francis Health Foundation hosted Harvest Fest, its annual fall fundraiser to raise money for the hospital, on November 11. The event was held at the Wahpeton Community Center and featured a beef and vacation raffle, as well as live and silent auctions. The bluegrass group Blue Wolf Duo provided live entertainment, and guests dined on chicken Lombardy and chocolate lava cake prepared by Simply Delicious Catering. As in years past, funds raised during Harvest Fest are used to fulfill areas of current community need. Proceeds from this year's event, for example, will help support recruiting efforts to bring additional physicians to our community. This year, the Harvest Fest raised more than $65,000. "There is a shortage of providers in our community—the number of doctors isn't keeping up with consumer demand," Lynnae says. "We want to do our part to bring providers to our community for many years to come." www.sfcare.org 7
