FLU SHOTS KEEP YOU PROTECTED ALL WINTER LONG. It's a common misconception that, if it's December and you still haven't gotten a flu shot, getting one now won't do you any good. In reality, flu shots provide protection throughout the flu season, regardless of when you receive one. Because flu season can last into May, getting one — even as late as February — still helps you ward off this nasty virus. For the 2016–2017 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released updated information about flu vaccines: • Don't spray it. The CDC recommends the flu shot over the nasal spray vaccine, which has been available in past years. The shot has been found to be more effective at preventing flu. • Give everyone a shot. Everyone age 6 months and older should receive the vaccine. It's particularly important that pregnant women and women who plan to become pregnant receive the flu shot, as well as any adult with a chronic disease. New moms who haven't been immunized should receive a vaccine within two weeks of giving birth. • Double up, if you need to. The CDC recommends that children between age 6 months and 8 years who have never been vaccinated for the flu or who received only one dose of the vaccine in past years get two doses. If your child has had two doses of the flu vaccine at any time in the past, he or she needs only one dose. • Wash up. Cover up. Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap, and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze to limit the spread of germs.
