Partnership The Power of At Sturgis Hospital, we know that two organizations working together can make a huge difference to our friends and neighbors. Our community partnerships include a broad range of commitments. Cooperating for Cancer Care Sturgis Hospital and West Michigan Cancer Center & Institute for Blood Disorders (WMCC) have formed a clinical partnership that expands patients' access to advanced cancer care, innovative clinical trials, and survivorship resources in St. Joseph County. By combining the expertise of WMCC and the compassionate staff of Sturgis Hospital, we can provide the highest level of care for patients who need it most. Services at the WMCC Clinic at Sturgis are provided by Hemasri Tokala, MD, and Dustin Bivins, DO, hematologist/oncologists with WMCC. Enriching the Community The Sturgis Enrichment Center, thanks to a partnership with the Hospital, offers resources for health and wellness. "We provided the equipment for two patient rooms within the center," says Jo Hagood, CMPE, BA, Vice President of Physician Practice Management for Sturgis Hospital. "They are not just the Hospital's rooms—any healthcare provider in the community can use the equipment in the rooms. We also provide health screening and education, including glucose tests, bone density screenings, and blood pressure readings, as well as lunch-and-learns with a diabetes counselor. By addressing health and wellness issues before they become acute problems, we can have a healthier community." "This is not a totally new operation— rather it's both services working together and becoming stronger," says Debbie Reeg, RN, Director of Home Health and Hospice at Sturgis Hospital and Three Rivers Health. "For the past two years, we have had a good relationship and managed contracts more efficiently to ensure cost of care is kept as low as possible." Better Blood and Lab Care Blood drives sponsored by the Hospital supply the TMF [The Medical Foundation] Blood Bank and allow an efficient and safe routing of blood products into the community. "The Hospital partners with TMF in South Bend, Indiana," says Kitrina Sell, Lab Director at Sturgis Hospital. "TMF allows Sturgis Hospital to have an exceptional pathology resource, a blood product supplier, and an excellent reference laboratory for testing not able to be performed at the Hospital." Educating and Teaching In March 2016, the Healthy Minds- Healthy Bodies event combined the previous years' Parenting Fair and Health Fair into one large event. Through a partnership with Sturgis Public Schools, more than 60 vendors were brought under one roof to provide screenings, information, and educational sessions for seniors, adults, and students.
