With your help—through your donations to the Sturgis Hospital Foundation and your support of our many events and programs—we're able to fund the quality, compassionate care that we've been known for since 1925. Helping others is central to our identity as a hospital, and that starts with our two biggest annual events—the Autumn Feast and the Golf Outing. "The funds raised during the annual Autumn Feast event helped purchase six inpatient beds and three automated external defibrillators [AEDs]," says Mary Kay Schultz, Vice President of Human Resources and the Foundation. "The 2016 Autumn Feast featured Sodexo chefs cooking a wide range of gourmet dishes, as well as a cash bar, live music, and dancing." The hospital beds purchased with this year's funds feature in-bed patient weight monitoring capability and patient exit alarms, both of which help us meet our goals of patient safety and comfort. The AEDs allow trained staff to provide immediate treatment for sudden, life-threatening cardiac issues in patients. In total, these items cost $50,000. The 2016 Golf Outing was held in May and hosted by the Auxiliary and the Foundation. This important event for our hospital featured lunch, 18 holes of golf, and a $25,000 putting contest. Proceeds from the event help purchase big-ticket items, including equipment for hearing screenings for newborns. Helping Hospice Last August, the Sturgis Hospital Hospice Program started an estate sale to raise funds to provide high- level care for patients at the end of their lives. Donations for the estate sale are gathered throughout the year, and you can make one at any time. "For patients who need hospice care, the Medicare reimbursement of $138 a day for care barely covers medications, much less the equipment or personnel needed for their care," says Debbie Reeg, RN, Director of Home Health and Hospice at Sturgis Hospital. "We rely on memorial gifts and donations to keep the hospice program running." Neighbors Helping Neighbors Once a month, the Hospital's Associate Activities Committee contributes toward a donation to a local nonprofit. Past recipients include Relay For Life, The Salvation Army, Walk for Warmth, Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services, and United Way, among others. The Hospital's relationship with United Way is even more special. For the past several years, Sturgis Hospital has been a top 10 contributor to the St. Joseph County United Way. Funding 40 nonprofit and community service organizations, St. Joseph County United Way receives upwards of $25,000 annually from Sturgis Hospital associates and friends of the Hospital, thanks to the efforts of its United Way Committee. Caring for Those With Cancer When you give to Sturgis Hospital, you can rest assured knowing that your generosity is put to good use. With your support, we're able to accomplish our goal of providing outstanding care to our community. Sturgis Hospital is also proud to support the fundraising events in our community. Dig Pink, hosted by the volleyball team at Sturgis High School, is held in honor of breast cancer survivors. Mary Beth Lancaster has coordinated this event for years. For the past three years, proceeds from the Dig Pink event have gone to the Oncology Department at Sturgis Hospital to help cancer patients in need. Tommy Hamilton, of Hamilton Harley-Davidson, hosts an annual benefit ride in honor of his mother—who participates with Tommy in the ride. Riders have generously contributed more than $8,000 to Sturgis Hospital. Giving Back Giving and STURGIS HOSPITAL IS a not-for-profit hospital, a designation that means our charitable facility invests our profits back into the Hospital rather than dispersing those funds to investors or shareholders. As a result, the Hospital maintains a community-focused approach to care, and our profits are used to provide the technology, training, services, and community events that area residents depend on. 4 S T U RG I S H O S P I TA L | www.SturgisHospital.com
