Putting Down Roots The warm spring allowed 84-year-old Bill Henkel to start his vegetable garden in mid-April. This will be the second year the Applewood Estates resident has planted tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, spinach, string beansand beets in the community garden. Bill moved into his two-bedroom, two-bath cottage on The Green at Applewood Estates in February 2010—one year after his wife of 56 years, Jean, passed away. “I tried living alone in our four-bedroom house in Iselin, but with Jean gone, there wasn’t much to do,” Bill says. “My four sons encouraged me to look at various types of retirement communities to find one with activities I would enjoy. I must have visited 15 places before selecting Applewood Estates. I like having my own cottage, a garage for my car and space to have flowers in the front yard so close to a vibrant community that keeps me busy all day.” Busy as a Bee Bill drives to church each morning for mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church and volunteered for its night for the homeless each Thursday from December 2011 through March 2012. A former CPA and financial vice president at International Wire Co., a division of Carlisle Corp., Bill joined the Finance Committee at Applewood Estates and was asked to be its chair within a month of joining. He was vice president of the Resident Association in 2011 and helped establish Nintendo® Wii™ bowling teams. Now, he plays poker regularly on Wednesday nights, goes on organized trips, including Lakewood Blue Claws baseball games, is a member of the Welcoming Committee, and serves as a resident ambassador. Active Again “I enjoyed eating at Applewood Estates for the social aspects, but the food was so good I gained weight,” Bill says. “Since January, I have nearly reached the weight-loss goal set by my physician. I get exercise tending the garden, walking my dog, Wally, twice a day, and when my knee feels up to it, playing nine holes of golf. Applewood Estates offers a wide range of activities and opportunities to meet new people.” For more information about The Green at Applewood Estates or to attend an information session, call (866) 925-8005 or visit www.TheGreenatApplewood.com Paving the Way Applewood Estates senior living community is also home to The Green at Applewood—20 cottages that surround a new landscaped patio area. Featuring a pavilion with chairs and tables, the new covered patio creates an inviting space for residents and their guests to congregate and enjoy the outdoors. Located a short walk from the amenities of Applewood Estates, including dining options, fitness center, indoor pool and the performing arts center, The Green at Applewood features the same worry-free maintenance and security options available to residents of the apartments in the main building. Cottage residents enjoy the best in residential living with an attached garage, landscaped yards, vaulted ceilings and their own front porch. “Whether you choose cottage living or an apartment, living at Applewood Estates gives you the opportunity to pursue your life without the headaches of home ownership,” says Sheri Van Orden, director of sales and marketing, Applewood Estates. “There is something for everyone at Applewood Estates.”
