A Philanthropic Foundation The orthopedic team at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center recently gained a surgeon with nearly 20 years of experience. Steven A. Mussett, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with special interests in foot and ankle surgery and hip and knee reconstruction, began his medical career in South Africa, where he earned a medical degree from the University of Cape Town, followed by a rotating internship in general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and orthopedics. From there, he moved to Ottawa, Canada, to pursue an orthopedic surgery residency, followed by two clinical fellowships, one in adult hip and knee reconstruction, the other in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery. After spending his rst three years in emergency medicine, Dr.Mussett transitioned to work in trauma as an orthopedic surgeon in Ontario. His work there focused on treating foot and ankle conditions and restoring joint function through arthroplasty. "I feel privileged and excited to be joining the team at Claxton-Hepburn," Dr. Mussett says. "The key to staying healthy is to keep moving, and to keep moving we need our bodies in the best possible condition they can be. I look forward to doing what I really enjoy, helping people with bone and joint problems, whether big or small, get back on track, making a difference in their lives." When he isn't performing surgery, Dr. Mussett spends his time outdoors, y shing, canoeing, and golng. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Mussett, call 315-394-7542. Throughout the year, the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation focuses on providing patients with healing, holistic experiences in comfortable settings. At the heart of the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation is the mission to help the Claxton-Hepburn team offer patients increasingly advanced care with newequipment, more service lines, and enhanced facilities. This year, the Foundation has a goal to better engage donors and strengthen its relationships with thehospital, its dedicated workforce, and the surrounding communities. "The donations made to the Foundation allow us to tackle things that are not necessarily at the top of the priority list for direct patient care, but are still important," says Nicole Gadway, assistant director of the Claxton- Hepburn Medical Center Foundation. "From supporting new building projects to making the hospital more warm and inviting, we want to make sure everyone is well taken care of and comfortable." The Foundation will focus on making patients and families feel nurtured from the time they enter one of our facilities to the time they leave. "Everything makes an impression—from bright infusions of art on the wall to new, more comfortable wheelchairs for transport," Gadway says. "We want everyone to feel welcome here so they continue to come back for their care."
