Dolores Hellmann Invaluable Our volunteers' gratitude and generosity help King's Daughters' Health flourish. DOLORES HELLMANN, 93, volunteers at KDH two days a week – and will often claim she benefits from it more than anyone else. "I like to get up in the morning and know I have something to do," she says. "I want to feel valuable." And valuable she is. Since she began volunteering, those two days a week have added up to more than 4,000 hours, about the equivalent of two years of full-time work. In addition to offering her time, Hellmann makes a monthly monetary donation through the KDH Foundation, in honor of her close friend Mary. "We were great friends," Hellmann says. "We did a lot of traveling together." When Mary became unable to live on her own, Hellmann moved in with her, and KDH's Home Care and Hospice services provided resources and equipment to assist with Mary's care. "It was such a privilege for me to help her," Hellmann says. "It was an honor." A Community of Supporters "People are very loyal to our hospice program," says Nadja Boone, BSN, RN, Director of the KDH Foundation. "They appreciate the care they or a loved one received, and they want a way to give back." Of course, every program at KDH has devoted supporters, Nadja points out. For example, the owners of Strikers Bowling Center in Vevay recently hosted an event to support the KDH Diabetes Care Center, and the Sigma Chi fraternity at Hanover College made a donation to the Cancer Treatment Center. These contributions – in all their sizes and forms – make a significant impact and help KDH fulfill its mission of improving the health of our friends and neighbors. ■ For more information about how to volunteer or provide support to the KDH Foundation, visit www.kdhmadison.org/foundation.aspx.
