An Art and a Science New surgeon, Edward William Kubek, MD, ensures his craft serves both function and aesthetics. IN APRIL, KING'S DAUGHTERS' Health will welcome Dr. Kubek, who is board-certified in general surgery and board-eligible in plastic and reconstructive surgery. As a young adult, the artistic Indiana native excelled at sculpture, but his attentions shifted when the anatomy books used in the studio sparked an interest in both medicine and helping people. Dr. Kubek earned his medical degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and completed his general surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. While completing a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery Edward William Kubek, MD Time to Man Up! Join us on April 29 for our annual men's health event, where we encourage men to take charge of their well-being and get educated about healthy lifestyles. EATING THE RIGHT foods, exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep all help men maintain the best health possible. But men who don't see a healthcare provider for recommended screenings could be missing a critical part of their overall wellness. That's why King's Daughters' Health offers Man Up!, hosted by the KDH Foundation. This year's event, on Saturday, April 29, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the KDH Conference Center, is open to all men in the community. "Our goal is to motivate men to adopt healthy habits," says Heather Foy, Wellness Coordinator at KDH. "We want men to not only fight disease but also know how important prevention is." Attendees will have a chance to learn about cancers that affect men specifically, heart disease and orthopedic health. Screenings, informational sessions and a complimentary breakfast will also be available. "Men are more likely to wait until symptoms pose a problem," Heather says. "Prevention is so much cheaper than treatment. This event is the perfect chance to take a first step toward better health." ■ To reserve your spot for Man Up!, call KDH Foundation Coordinator Madonna Wilson at (812) 801-0555. at the University of Colorado in Aurora, he was selected to visit Vietnam to learn Operation Smile's approach to cleft-lip and cleft-palate care. After completing his studies, Dr. Kubek's interest gravitated to reconstructive surgery, where he could employ his extensive training and artist's eye to treat patients affected by congenital anomalies, trauma, infections and various forms of cancer. "If I am performing a reconstructive surgery, my goal is to achieve a functional outcome and the best aesthetic result possible," he says. In addition to practicing general surgery at KDH, Dr. Kubek will perform breast reconstructions, which will enable patients treated at the KDH Cancer Center to receive follow-up care without having to travel. ■ To schedule a consultation with Dr. Kubek, call (812) 801-0840.
