A new program allows local YMCA members to get a professional opinion about an injury on the spot. Injury PEOPLE WHO PRIMARILY work out on the weekends may be tempted to overdo a session of exercise when the opportunity arises. If this results in a sprain, strain, bump, bruise, or other problem, the next concern could be who to see or where to go for an assessment. Northwestern Medicine Physical Therapy is piloting a program intended to help. "Our program makes a licensed athletic trainer available on-site for injury screening," says Chris Laurent, LAT, ATC, athletic trainer at Northwestern Medicine Physical Therapy. "Recommendations could be as simple as some additional stretching or something more complex, in which case the trainer would direct the member to a physician." The program is currently available for members of the Kishwaukee Family YMCA on Mondays and Fridays from 9 to 11 am. Prevention Requires Action The screening program is intended to evaluate injuries early to help ensure a temporary concern doesn't turn into a longer- term medical issue. "Listen to what your body is telling you," Laurent says. "If you're not sure why something hurts, put your exercise regimen on pause and take advantage of this service to get a medical opinion." The screening program is also planned to be offered at the new Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Health and Fitness Center, scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018.
