The full spectrum of cardiac care— from preventive to progressive treatment—happens here. Continuity of Cardiology Care TWO NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE Regional Medical Group interventional cardiologists recently began seeing patients in the KishHealth Physician Group, DeKalb, building. This places them in close proximity to a number of multispecialty providers, creating a more team-based, collaborative approach to patient care. Cardiology services provided by Christopher J. Berry, MD, FACC, FSCAI, and Jacob Stephen, MD, include consultative cardiology, heart failure, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease. "We cover all general cardiovascular issues a patient might deal with over a lifetime," Dr. Stephen says. "We seek to identify patients at an early stage of disease progression so we can begin any necessary prevention or management services. These might include smoking cessation, diet modification, or cardiac rehabilitation." Heart Imaging and Beyond Heart ultrasounds can be performed in-house, while angiograms and exercise electrocardiograms, commonly known as exercise stress tests, take place across the street at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. For those requiring interventional cardiology procedures, Dr. Berry and Dr. Stephen perform: Balloon angioplasty and stenting Cardiac catheterizations Electrical cardioversion Transesophageal echocardiography Pacemaker checks Revascularization of lower extremity for leg pain and nonhealing wounds Patients requiring open-heart surgery or minimally invasive valve replacement or ablation for electrical heart disorders are smoothly connected with cardiac specialists and subspecialists in the Northwestern Medicine system. "We have established relationships with physicians and processes that help facilitate transfer, especially in an emergency," Dr. Berry says. "In addition, from a research standpoint, we have the opportunity to enroll patients needing valve repair or replacement in Northwestern Medicine clinical trials for heart valve regurgitation." kishprograms.org Free Know Your Numbers Screening Appointments Knowing and understanding your numbers is vital to good health.
