Rhinology and Skull Base Program Continues Pursuit of Excellence The University of Utah Rhinology and Skull Base Program provides unparalleled clinical care for patients with complex nasal, sinus, and anterior cranial fossa diseases. Simultaneously, the faculty seeks to expand and disseminate the body of knowledge about these conditions. Richard R. Orlandi, MD, Jeremiah Alt, MD, PhD, and Gretchen Oakley, MD, lead a team of medical professionals and researchers who pursue excellence in both clinical care and academic leadership. As we settle into 2017, it's satisfying to look back at some of the Program's successes. Caring for patients with nasal, sinus, and anterior skull base pathology is at the core of the Program's mission. Drs. Alt, Oakley, and Orlandi serve as the rhinologic experts, not only for the University of Utah Health system, but for the Intermountain West as well. Care of the patient, not just treatment of the patient's disease, is their goal and informs every aspect of their clinical delivery. They are fortunate to work with a team of top- notch residents, nurses, medical assistants, surgery coordinators, and others who share this vision. Exploring the frontiers of knowledge, either by developing new understandings through research or teaching trainees in rhinology and skull base surgery, helps future patients as well. Academic productivity in 2016 was unparalleled for the Program. Here are some highlights: • The Sinus & Skull Base Research Program directed by Dr. Alt has been awarded over $1 million in extramural funding. Dr. Alt is the principal investigator (PI) on three extramurally funded research grants and two intramural funded research grants. He is also a co-PI for a R43 award through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and a co-investigator for a multi- center R01 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Alt's research activities span the gamut of basic science throughtranslational and into clinical outcomes research. • Dr. Orlandi was the primary author of the International Consensus Statement on Rhinology and Allergy – Rhinosinusitis, published in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology in 2016. This 188-page systematic review analyzed the current state of knowledge about the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of rhinosinusitis. With over 140 international authors, including Dr. Alt, and nearly 1,500 references, this work further establishes the University of Utah Rhinology and Skull Base Program as a worldwide leader in the field. • In 2016 the University of Utah Rhinology Program faculty published 23 peer-reviewed research articles. Notable among these were some of the most downloaded papers in our field in 2016, especially Dr. Oakley's collaboration with Drs. Alt and Orlandi on systematic reviews of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea diagnosis and management. There are nearly a dozen already published in 2017 or in press, with many more in the pipeline for later this year. • In 2016 the University of Utah Rhinology Program faculty lectured throughout the U.S. and internationally. Our faculty lectured in Poland and China in 2016, and invitations for 2017 include Rome, France, and Taiwan. • Drs. Alt, Oakley, and Orlandi will be welcoming their first fellow, Kristine Smith, MD, from the University of Calgary, in July. Dr. Smith was chosen from a very competitive applicant pool and has already collaborated on research papers with the University of Utah Rhinology and Skull Base faculty prior to starting her fellowship. • Dr. Orlandi currently serves as the President-elect of the American Rhinologic Society, with his term as President starting in September 2017. He was recently named the Chief Medical Officer for Ambulatory Health for University of Utah Health. It was a busy 2016 for the Rhinology and Skull Base Program and we are confident that as we continue to "follow our true north" of patient-centered clinical and meaningful academic excellence, 2017 will be another terrific year!
