People Have Friends People Realize Personal Goals Outcomes in Action Every Tuesday evening from September through April, you will find best buddies James, Colin, and Sean at West Acres Bowl, having a blast as they bowl their hearts out in a men's bowling league. Each one joined the league at a different time, but they have been bowling together for several years. Colin, who was skeptical at first, was encouraged to join by his sister, who wanted him to have more connections with people in the community. Sean has been bowling for so long that no one, including him, can remember when he started. James was the last to come on board after he was invited by Sean to come and try it out. Although hesitant at first because he felt he was too busy with other activities, James finally gave in and was instantly hooked. Through the years, many of their bowling partners have come and gone, but these three have stuck together and developed a closer friendship as a result. Sean, always the encourager, will cheer them on with a reminder to "follow through." Colin remains calm and cool while James can barely contain his excitement every time his ball rolls down the lane at top speed. These three bring enthusiasm and energy to every game, so win or lose they find a deep sense of camaraderie and satisfaction in having done their best in a sport they love. When league bowling comes to a close each season, they celebrate with a pizza party, but it doesn't end there. In the meantime, each makes sure they are getting plenty of practice to increase their bowling averages for when leagues start up again the next year. Tom has dreamed of having a dog his whole life. This dream came true for him last summer. Tom had saved up his money for a couple of years to be able to afford the expenses that come with a pet. Tom, his manager, and staff looked at the surrounding rescue sites for dogs that might work for Tom. Tom saw a few that could be possibilities, but when he saw a little Maltese named Zoe, he knew she was the one. Tom was assisted by staff to go to the Homeward Animal Shelter, pay Zoe's fees, and buy her supplies. Then Zoe came home. Tom has had Zoe for nine months now; she is very friendly and a joy to him and to everyone. Tom participates in almost all aspects of Zoe's care. He has learned how to train Zoe through positive reinforcement, giving her treats when she does something right. When Zoe does her business outside, Tom says, "Good girl," tells Zoe, "Sit," and then gives her a treat. Tom keeps his eye on Zoe's food and water bowls, and makes sure to fill them when they are getting low. Tom is assisted to bathe, brush, give haircuts, and take care of Zoe's teeth and eyes. At times, Tom asks a friend in the adjoining apartment to take care of his dog when he is going to be out. Tom is a member at PetSmart and frequents the dog park, where he visits and spends time with fellow dog owners. Tom's face lights up and says he is proud to introduce Zoe to others. Zoe loves snuggling up with Tom in his chair in the living room. Tom and Zoe will continue to enjoy relaxing on their patio, having many adventures, and experiencing companionship for years to come.
