Her practice focuses on diabetes and insulin pump management. KATHY LACIVITA, MD D r. She ha s been a practicing endocrinologist at the Texas Diabetes Institute for the la st 20 yea rs a nd is a n Assistant Professor of Medicine/ Diabetes at t he Un iversit y of Texas Hea lth Science Center at San Antonio. She is Chair of the Texas Diabetes Council a nd was appointed by Governor Abbott. She is Vice President of the Texas chapter of American Association of Clinica l Endocrinologist. Prior to this, Dr. LaCivita spent 16 years practicing medicine in the U.S. Air Force. She finished her last tour as chief of endocrinolog y at Wilford Ha ll Medica l Center, director of the endocrinolog y fellowship tra ining progra m, director of the Diabetic Care Clinic at Wilford Ha ll Medica l Center, and endocrinolog y consult to the Air Force Surgeon General. JORGE VELEZ GARZA, MD Dr. Velez Ga rza is a n endocri- nologist skilled in thyroid disease, ultrasound and fine needle aspira- tion who has been with the Texas Diabetes Institute since 2016. Originally from Mexico, Dr. Velez Garza completed an endocrine, diabetes and metabolism fellow- ship at The UT Hea lth Science Center in San Antonio, where he fulfills his passion for teaching as an Assistant Professor. Outside of work, Dr. Velez Garza enjoys exercising, traveling and spending time with his family. At the Texas Diabetes Institute, Dr. Velez Garza wishes to fulfill a dream of having a long career serving and caring for the San Antonio community. ARUNA VENKATESH, MD Dr. Ven kat esh ha s worked a s an endocrinologist at the Texas Diabetes Institute since 2000. She completed her fel lowship in endocrinolog y, diabetes a nd metabolism at the University of Texa s Sout hwester n Medica l Center following her residency i n i nt e r n a l m e d i c i n e a t t h e University of Hawaii and medi- ca l school at Osmania Medica l College in India. Besides patient care and teaching third-year medical stu- dents, she is passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles in the community. She reached out to San Antonio Independent School District elementar y school students, encouraging them to adopt simple and easy-to-follow tips for eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, limiting recreational screen time to no more than two hours a day and engaging in at least one hour of daily physica l activity.
