PHYSICIAN BIOS PAULA PHILLIPS, MD Dr. Phillips grew up in Odessa, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biolog y and her medical degree at Texas Tech Universit y. She completed her interna l medicine residency at Scott & W hite Medica l Center i n Temple, Texa s, fol lowed by her endocrine fellowship at the Medica l College of Georg ia , in Augusta, Georgia. She is an 18-year resident of San Antonio, where she lives with her husband and two children. She has practiced endocrinology for 19 years — 12 years with UT/UHS and the rest in private practice. Her practice is general endocrinology. She is known for being caring and compassionate, as well as having a holistic approach to patient care. ALBERTO O. CHAVEZ- VELAZQUEZ, MD, MSCI B or n a nd r a i s e d i n nor t her n Mexico, Dr. Chavez-Vela zquez moved to San Antonio in 2005 to pursue postdoctoral training in diabetes/metabolism and a mas- ter's degree in clinical investigation at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Prior to that , he completed a n internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he served as chief resident. Following his research training, Dr. Chavez-Velazquez com- pleted an internal medicine residency and clinical fellowship in endocrinolog y and metabolism at the University of Texas Hea lth Science Center at San Antonio. In 2015, he joined the Adult Endocrinolog y Clinic at the Texas Diabetes Institute as sta • endocrinologist, where he a lso works as a Clinica l Investigator. His clinica l interests include the management of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome and lipid disorders. His research work focuses on diabetes prevention, specifically the pathophysiolog y and early pharmacologic inter vention in prediabetes. SCHEHEREZADA W. URBAN MCCARTHY, MD Dr. Urban McCarthy joined the Adult Endocrinolog y Clinic at t he Tex a s Di a bet es I n s t it ut e in 2015 after completing her fel- lowship training. She was born in Mexico City and raised in the city and port of Tampico, Tamaulipas. She received her medica l degree from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas School of Medicine and graduated as va ledictorian of her class. During medica l school, she pa r ticipated in a one-yea r student excha nge program with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After completing her interna l medicine residency at the Atlanta Medica l Center, she completed her fellowship training in endocrinolog y, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Texas Hea lth Science Center at San Antonio and adopted Texas as her second home. As a genera l endocrinologist, she enjoys a ll a reas of endocrinolog y — pa r ticula rly diabetes management, diseases of the thyroid, adrena l and pituitary glands, and calcium and bone metabolism. During her leisure time she enjoys spending time with her husband and son. She likes cooking, outdoor activities, dancing, reading and going to the movies. SARIMAR AGOSTO SALGADO, MD Dr. A gosto Sa lgado is a n endo- crinologist a nd adjunct faculty member at UT Health San Antonio whose clinical practice is focused on thyroid cancer and endocrine neoplasia, including thyroid fine needle aspiration clinics. During her training, Dr. Agosto Salgado's clinical research included study- ing the combination of thyroid ultra sound cha racteristics a nd indeterminate cy tolog y results during thyroid nodule eva luation as a predictor for ma lignancy. She is an active member of University Hea lth System Commission on Cancer Committee and University Hea lth System Pa lliative Ca re Subcommittee, as well as 1 0
