CANCER CARE Finding a JULUKE NOTICED THE small knot in her left breast in January 2016. She was 50 years old at the time and doing her monthly self-exam, not expecting to find anything unusual. "I didn't think much of it," Juluke said. "I wrote it off as fibrocystic tissue, and my gynecologist thought the lump seemed too small to be cancer." But less than a year later, Juluke got a shocking diagnosis. Scheduled for eye surgery at a hospital in Baton Rouge in October 2016, she requested a breast exam while at the hospital. at is when doctors discovered that Juluke had breast cancer and began an aggressive course of treatment that included a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. When Juluke relocated to Lubbock in March 2017, she sought care at UMC, which was considered the best of the best by her friends in the area. She quickly connected with the oncology team at the SWCC Breast Center of Excellence. "ey addressed me like they knew me as soon as I walked in the door, which made the transition so much easier and less stressful," Juluke said. "Any concerns I had about moving to a new medical facility in a new town disappeared." e providers at UMC administered Juluke's first round of chemotherapy on March 10 and her last dose on May 13. Radiation followed, beginning at the end of June and continuing until the end of July. e grueling treatment sessions quickly proved to be very powerful. When August arrived, a positron emission tomography scan revealed that Juluke was cancer-free. "I am so relieved, and I know I'm getting stronger," Juluke said.
