Furthering CRITICAL PATIENT CARE
THIS SEPTEMBER, UMC HEALTH SYSTEM OPENED A NEW MULTIPURPOSE INTERMEDIATE CARE UNIT.
UMC'S MEDIC AL SURGIC AL Intermediate Critical Care Unit (MS-
ICCU) and Neurological Intensive Care Unit (Neurological ICU)
make up one Intermediate Care Unit that serves multiple patient
populations. Twelve patient beds opened in September, and more
beds have opened as staff members have finished orientation.
"Our new units will further our ability to support our mission,"
said Jessica Wolff, M.S.N., R.N., director of the MS-ICCU at
UMC. "We want 'Service Is Our Passion' to be synonymous with
high-quality care in the minds of not only our patients, but also
our staff."
Patient populations served include:
+ Complex medical-surgical
postoperative patients
+ GI disorders
+ Overdose and withdrawals
+ Neurological diagnoses,
such as stroke or seizure
+ Post-trauma
Nurses hired specifically for both units will be trained in multiple
areas of the hospital, allowing them to form relationships with peers
and advance and diversify their skill sets.
MEETING PATIENT NEEDS
"Currently, UMC does not have a dedicated neurological service
line, so creating an ICU setting that focuses on neurological care
streamlines our patient service lines," Wolff said. "We are better
stewards of these patients and are equipped to provide them better
care, which leads to better outcomes."
e MS-ICCU and Neurological ICU staff are committed to
sharing in the success of offering these new service lines to patients
and family members, and this new environment to our community,
through physician collaboration.
