Diagnostic Imaging ABCs Diagnostic imaging tests help physicians diagnose a wide range of conditions—from broken bones to osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. Learn more about the tests offered at the CHI St. Francis Health Diagnostic Imaging Department. Bone densitometry—Also known as DEXA scans, these X-ray-based imaging studies help determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures. Physicians recommend this test for all women ages 65 and older and men ages 70 and older. Computed tomography (CT) scans—These scans are performed using special X-ray equipment and help physicians diagnose broken bones, cancer, blood clots, and signs of heart disease, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Fluoroscopy studies, including upper and lower gastrointestinal series and swallow studies—These tests help physicians get a closer look at abnormalities affecting bodily systems, such as the gastrointestinal tract. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—MRIs allow physicians to closely examine your brain, spinal cord, and other organs and structures to look for tumors, soft-tissue injuries, and other abnormalities. Mammograms—These screenings, which the American Cancer Society recommends annually for women between ages 45 and 54 and can be performed every other year for women beginning at 55, help diagnose breast cancer. Ultrasounds—These radiation-free imaging tests allow physicians to visualize internal structures, such as your heart, kidney, and liver.
