For the past two years, the nursing home at CHI St. Francis Health has maintained a Five-Star Quality Rating with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help families and caregivers identify nursing homes that score above average in their ability to care for people. In order to achieve this status, St. Francis Home met stringent standards in its health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. "Maintaining a five-star status with the CMS really shows our dedication to providing quality, personalized care to residents and their families," says Rebecca Tessin-Wika, RN, Director of Nursing at St. Francis Home. "We're always monitoring our quality and performance so we can continue to improve." Like Family One secret behind the nursing home's success is its staff's ability to treat residents like family. "We have many staff members who have been here for more than 20 years," Rebecca says. "When you're in one place for that long, you really start to think of everyone around you as family." Rebecca went on to explain that staff will frequently run to the store for residents who may not have nearby family members. "Sometimes they may want their favorite snack, hairspray, or lotion, and we're happy to go out and get it for them," Rebecca says. "After all, that's just how you treat family." Word of Mouth While ratings are helpful, the best way to learn about a facility is by asking the people who live there. So, we asked our residents one question: "What makes you happy living at St. Francis Home?" "Well, what doesn't make me happy here? The staff is amazing and they treat me like family. They look out for me and make sure that I have everything that I need." —Corrine Johnson "I like being able to get outside whenever the weather is decent to enjoy the outdoors. I like that the staff takes us on outings to different places that I wouldn't be able to go on my own." —Shirley Jensvold "So many things here make me happy, where do I begin? I love the cleanliness of the place. I've gotten close to staff and residents alike and it feels like family around here. I never thought I'd be happy living in a nursing home, but over five years later, I can't imagine living anywhere else." — Esther Gordon "I love the fact that they make sure that I keep exercising. I can now touch my toes, which is something that I couldn't do when I first came here. They keep me motivated and active." —Hazel Steussy The ratings don't lie: St. Francis Home goes above and beyond for its residents. Five Stars, for You Highway 75 North and 210 West 6
