heart to Heart The leading cause of deaTh worldwide, coronary hearT disease (chd) is expecTed To be responsible for 14.2% of all deaThs by 2030. predicTably, revascularizaTion accounTs for The mosT in-hospiTal procedures. age-adjusted death rates for chd have steadily decreased nearly every year since 1980. rates (deaths per 100,000 population) declined from 345.2 in 1980 to 257.5 in 1989, after ���ve years, coronary artery bypass grafting (cabg) was more effective than percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) at relieving angina (84% vs. 79%), and fewer patients required revascularization (9.8% vs. 40.1%) post-procedure. from 249.6 in 1990 to 194.6 in 1999, patients undergoing pci have half the risk of stroke (0.6%) compared with cabg (1.2%), but the difference in the 10-year survival rate is less than 1%. and from 186.8 in 2000 to 122.7 in 2008. despite the long-term ef���cacy of cabg, utilization of this more expensive procedure has declined while pci has remained relatively stable.
