from the Publisher Central new York Publisher: Richard Keene Richard Keene Publisher Central New York RKEENE@MDNEwS.CoM (315) 446-8331 t Managing Editor: Steve Barrett for reading the January/February issue of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. h A n k yo u v e ry M u c h Our cover story features the heart disease specialists at the New York Heart Center. The New York Heart Center is utilizing state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging scans that expose patients to the lowest possible levels of radiation. It is the only medical facility in Central New York providing in-house, low-dose coronary CT angiography (CCTA) with calcium scoring, low-radiation positron emission tomography (PET) and UltraSPECTs half-dose, half-time radiation processing for single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) imaging. We are fortunate to have such cutting-edge diagnostic technology right here in our backyard. In another feature story, we cover the pathology and lab services offered by UHS in the Binghamton market. These services are gaining attention regionally, nationally and internationally, based on the organizations reputation for quality and the case studies researched by the labs Medical Director, Jagmohan Sidhu, M.D. Dr. Sidhu and Broome Oncologys Ronald Harris, D.O., have been organizing a hematology/hematopathology symposium in Greater Binghamton for the past seven years, attracting well-known lecturers from the University of Rochester, Upstate Medical University, Albany Medical Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and elsewhere. Also in this issue, Jerry Hoffman, Executive Vice President of the Onondaga County Medical Society, comments on the uncertain future of health care. Financial challenges that face our state and nation can significantly impact physicians and, therefore, patient care. Hoffman points out that this is a situation in which all physicians voices need to be heard. Sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience, one with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community.
