NEW PAP TEST GUIDELINES
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has issued new guidelines for Pap tests for healthy women.
Women from 21 to 65 years old should have a Pap test every three years.
Women age 65 and older should not have Pap tests, unless they are at risk for cervical cancer.
Women who have had a hysterectomy for benign reasons should not have Pap tests.
Women between ages 30 and 65 who prefer less-frequent screenings may choose to have a Pap test plus a human papillomavirus (HPV) test every five years.
Some of these guidelines may have changed since you began well-woman exams. For personalized screening recommendations based on family and medical history, consult your primary care provider or OB/GYN.
