PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Peter Lascarides, DO The Pain Institute of Long Island announced that Peter Lascarides, DO, has been nominated as the new President-Elect to the Eastern Pain Association Board of Directors for a two-year term, beginning 2021. Dr. Lascarides has been a member of the Eastern Pain Association, an organization focused on furthering professional knowledge and innovation in pain medicine, since 2015, and currently serves as Treasurer. Dr. Lascarides looks forward to the role and learning under current President Neel Mehta, MD. "I am excited about the position and believe I have a lot to bring to it," he says. "My current position with the Pain Institute of Long Island has prepared me for this moment." Dr. Lascarides began his training at the Albert Einstein - Montefiore Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship Program, learning from some of the country's best physicians. Upon completion, he was fortunate to return to the group of people he formed meaningful bonds with during training, now at PIOLI, where he has proudly served the Eastern Long Island region since August 2016. Adept in interventional procedures, Dr. Lascarides is known for his comprehensive, multi- modal approach to treating patients. Along with targeted therapies, he often encourages lifestyle modifications and home exercise regimens to promote healing. His passion is helping patients to take control of their pain and to regain function. Dr. Lascarides' goal as a physician is to provide his patients with a happier, more functional and more fulfilling life. Dr. Lascarides maintains his academic status as a Clinical Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, Stony Brook University Hospital. In recognition of their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL sent four Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital employees to participate in the NFL's Super Bowl experience for front-line workers. The four hospital employees — two physicians, an emergency department nurse and a respiratory therapist — were among the 7,500 vaccinated health care workers who will receive free tickets from the NFL to the Super Bowl in Tampa as part of the NFL's salute. A Rockville Centre resident and grateful patient of Mount Sinai South Nassau helped make the trip possible by sponsoring the hotel and travel expenses for the nurse and respiratory therapist. The four Mount Sinai South Nassau employees who participated in the game day experience were Eileen Carolan, RN, Emergency Department nurse; Iris Halem, Director of Respiratory Therapy; Frank Coletta, MD, Chief of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine; and Adhi Sharma, MD, Chief Medical Officer. They all have received their first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Each of hospital's four staff members chosen played a different role to support the more than 1,600 COVID-19 patients treated at Mount Sinai South Nassau during the pandemic. According to the NFL, all the healthcare workers at the Super Bowl received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. It used this special initiative as an opportunity to promote the importance of vaccination and appropriate health practices, including wearing masks in public settings. Zachary Kon, MD Zachary Kon, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon with expertise in heart and lung transplant as well as experience in major types of advanced adult cardiac surgery, joins Northwell Health as Surgical Director of two programs: Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation, and Advanced Lung Failure and Lung Transplantation. Dr. Kon will be based at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital.
