where he was Surgical Director of the hospital's lung transplantation program and its pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy program. Prior to that, Dr. Kon headed the surgical programs for heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support and lung transplant at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Kon treats patients with advanced and end-stage heart and lung disease. This can include the use of artificial life-support devices and removal of clot (pulmonary embolectomy) and scar tissue from the arteries of the lungs. A recognized expert in heart transplantation, Dr. Kon also is an authority on the surgical management of heart failure with ventricular assist devices (LVAD, or artificial heart pump) as well as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, or an external life support machine). Including more than 125 articles in peer-reviewed journals, his research is focused on how minimally invasive surgery can decrease pain, recovery time and the risk of complications for patients. In addition, Dr. Kon has given more than 160 scientific presentations at medical and surgical meetings both in the United States and internationally. Dr. Kon received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery from the same institution. He completed his fellowship in lung transplantation from Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Kon will hold the title of associate professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Seth Blacksburg, MD, MBA Seth Blacksburg, MD, MBA, has been appointed the Chair of Radiation Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital and Associate Professor of radiation medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. In his new role, Dr. Blacksburg is responsible for clinical oversight and strategic development, as he works with the radiation medicine service line as well as Cancer Institute and Lenox Hill leadership to drive high-quality cancer care, research and education of the next generation of radiation oncologists. He will also work to ensure the quality of clinical services and assist with educational curriculum for outreach programs in the department. After graduating summa cum laude from Tufts University, Dr. Blacksburg concurrently pursued a medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine, where he served as class president, and a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in health sector management from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business. His post-graduate training included an internship in internal medicine at New York University/Bellevue Hospital and a residency in radiation oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he served as Chief Resident for two years. He stayed on as faculty at Mount Sinai where he was the first radiation oncologist selected into the Greater New York Hospital Association/United Hospital Fund clinical quality fellowship. Sharon Rosenbaum Smith, MD Sharon Rosenbaum Smith, MD, a nationally renowned breast cancer surgeon, has been appointed Associate Chief of Breast Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Rosenbaum Smith specializes in breast conservation surgery, skin and nipple sparing mastectomies, sentinel node biopsies, high risk patients and young women affected by breast cancer. Through her new post, she joins the Breast Cancer Center at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, which treats more New Yorkers for cancer than any other health care provider. In her new role, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith will help expand and enhance the hospital's rapidly growing multidisciplinary breast cancer program. Her busy private breast surgery practice located in Columbus Circle, Breastlink New York, has been integrated into Northwell's Cancer Institute and is now one of several convenient access points for breast cancer care throughout Manhattan. Other New York City locations include Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and Lenox Health Greenwich Village. After obtaining her medical degree from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education/New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith went on to complete a general surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident.
