Greetings, and welcome to MD News Mid Penn. This issue, we turn our attention to Penn State Health and some exciting innovations that are allowing patients to access less-invasive treatments for a variety of conditions. Our cover feature explores radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign thyroid nodules. RFA offers patients the benefits of thyroid nodule removal without the risks of thyroid surgery. We also look at ways surgeons are helping patients with gallbladder disease who are not surgical candidates. A new approach, percutaneous endoscopic biliary lithectomy, allows doctors to remove gallstones without conventional surgery. Finally, we examine a new imaging technique to improve glioma surgery. This month, we bring you two special clinical sections. Our clinical section on degenerative disease explores benefits and risks of denosumab for bone density loss. A separate article reports on researchers who are teasing out which deep brain stimulation frequencies best help patients with Parkinson's disease. Another clinical section on radiology explores a new treatment that uses popped microbubbles to boost patient response to transarterial radioembolization (TARE). Studies show that inertial cavitation, or the destruction of microbubbles, enhances the body's response to TARE. In our national feature, we examine the benefits of patient navigation.
