Local News Cancer patients on Long Island now will be able to participate in two clinical trials for breast and lung cancer at Mount Sinai South Nassau. The hospital has received approval from The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Central Institutional Review Board to serve as a National Clinical Trial Network Affiliate within the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai South Nassau is now a part of a prestigious collection of organizations and clinicians in the U.S., Canada and internationally that lead clinical trials to establish new standards of care, set the stage for regulatory approval of new therapies, test new treatment approaches and validate new human genome biomarkers. Institutions affiliated with the NCI Central Institutional Review Board rely on its body of national experts to ensure that clinical trials are reviewed efficiently, with the highest ethical and quality standards. The review board is also dedicated to protecting the rights and welfare of participants in cancer clinical trials. Upon receiving National Cancer Institute approval, Mount Sinai South Nassau became an affiliate site for two clinical trials. One is a randomized phase 3 trial that compares treatment approaches for breast cancer and the other assesses side effects as well as effectiveness of using cancer immunotherapy Keytruda in the treatment of patients with recurrent stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. In recognition of excellence toward caring for patients age 65 and older, Glen Cove Hospital's emergency department has earned top accreditation by the American College of Emergency Physicians for its expertise in treating geriatric patients. Glen Cove, a member of Northwell Health, is the only community hospital in New York State and the 19th in the United States and Canada to earn ACEP's Level 1 gold status, which requires hospitals to meet more than two dozen requirements and best practices related to providing quality care for older adults. Key areas include staffing and education, a geriatric social worker dedicated to the ED, standardized geriatric-focused policies and procedures, quality improvement and outcomes measurement, equipment and supplies, and the physical environment. The multidisciplinary geriatric team includes physicians, nurses, pharmacists, psychiatrists, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other specialists to ensure full-service care. Several upgrades to the physical environment were made for safety and enhanced care. Already equipped with private ED treatment rooms, Glen Cove dedicated four rooms to geriatric care. More will be added soon, with increased precautions against COVID-19. Windowed rooms provided natural light and subdued lighting, helpful for any patients with dementia, and large wall clocks and non-skid floors were installed. Comfortable recliners are in each room for patients or visitors. More than $3 million was raised at Northwell Health's annual Constellation Gala, held virtually . The event celebrates philanthropic support as the driving force of innovations throughout Northwell Health that are transforming health care around the country. The film, by Oscar-nominated Director Matthew Heineman, offers a powerful and unflinching look inside the halls of Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens between March and June 2020. It bears witness to the honor, sacrifice and dedication of those frontline workers. It also captures what New Yorkers went through during the Kristen Geissinger, RN, Nurse Manager; Karen McKinney, RN, Director, Patient Services; Natalie Calinda, Senior Administrative Manager; Payal Sud, MD, Associate Chair; John Colletta, Chair; and Brittany Cagan, Social Worker 2 8
