first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are gut-wrenching scenes of suffering and death — but also stories of resilience, hope and recovery. Most of all, humanity shines throughout "The First Wave." Glen Cove Hospital received a $1 million gift from John and Diana Colgate toward the purchase of its first in-house MRI machine and the creation of an MRI suite. The amount contributes significantly toward the $3 million total cost the hospital is raising to acquire this technology, which is critical for detection, diagnosis and treatment of many medical conditions. The proposed in-house MRI suite will accommodate two to three times more patients a day and would include on-call staff during evenings and nights to reduce or eliminate overnight waits, according to Melonie Pernice, Glen Cove Hospital's Associate Executive Director for Hospital Operations. Construction of the four-room suite includes a waiting area and patient dressing room, as well as spaces for pre- screening and testing. $1 million gift from John and Diana Colgate Cohen Children's Medical Center was selected by the Ryan Seacrest Foundation (RSF) as the recipient of its newest Seacrest Studio, a state- of-the-art studio for pediatric patients to explore the creative realms of radio, television and new media. Cohen Children's Medical Center will be home to the foundation's 12th studio of this kind nationwide — and the only one in New York. The studio, opening in 2022, will be located prominently in the atrium of Cohen Children's Medical Center. Seacrest Studios are charitable endeavors of the RSF, founded by radio and television host and producer Ryan Seacrest along with his family. RSF hopes to contribute positively to the healing process for children and their families during their stay, as well as uplift spirits of the clinical and administrative staff at Cohen Children's. Seacrest Studios will be used to provide a variety of programming to patients, whether they are physically in the studio or watching through a closed-circuit network from their in-room television screen. Patients will have the opportunity to host their own radio and television shows, watch live musical performances, play games and even interview celebrity guests that visit. The studio will be encased in glass, allowing patients and visitors to view the daily programming happening inside. Cohen Children's Medical Center is the recipient of the Seacrest Studio. The Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) recognized Catholic Health's commitment to create the safest environments and deliver the best outcomes with its 2021 Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety. The HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety encourages and recognizes a broad dissemination of successful quality improvement and innovative patient safety initiatives in four categories based on organization size and type. Catholic Health won for its submission, Implementing a Patient Experience Program, in the "Healthcare System or Hospital with 500 Beds or More" category. Catholic Health's entry was selected from the 120 nominations HANYS received for the 2021 Pinnacle Awards. The project focused on changing the organization's culture, centering on delivering an excellent patient experience in every encounter —Every Patient, Every Time. This led to Catholic Health's Golden Keys to I-CARE behavior as the guiding principles of the project, which celebrates positive patient experience as the "key" to success. These changes resulted in Catholic Health's Press Ganey score for "Overall Rating" increasing with patient feedback identifying four communication behavior priorities for driving continuous improvement. Initially focused on the acute care setting, this program has been successfully implemented across all Catholic Health physician practices, home care, hospice and nursing home facilities. In addition to being recognized by HANYS, this program also won "Best System Transformation Project" at Catholic Health's Pinnacle Awards in October. ■ Share your story in the next issue of MD News.
