TESTING…
As the awareness of textile impacts on the environment escalates, so
too does corporate greenwashing. In response, firms encourage more
transparency and traceability in the supply chain. Recently, execs
increasingly believe that an emphasis on testing also should complete
the sustainable solutions trifecta. Earlier this year Hohenstein released
a new standard, one that takes a holistic approach to reducing eco
impacts of textile products with an eye on biodegradation and fiber
release. Called DIN SPEC 4827, the Dynamic Image Analysis studies
microfiber detection, biodegradability testing and measurement of
the potential ecotoxicological impact. e research and the results
together will help companies make informed decisions about
commitments to corporate 2030 sustainability goals. "We know the
problem, and it is bad for people and the planet," said Hohenstein's
Dr. Jan Beringer, who explains that this new standard offers a
solution that will "get everyone talking to each other, breaking down
silos." Tackling microfiber release and biodegradability are high
priority industry issues, and as such, to bring change, "you need to
be where the music is playing" said Beringer. n
