"I followed Dr. Michael Klein, [MD,] who was a colleague and a mentor during my residency," Dr. Cohen says. "After making inquiries of my own, I was very impressed with everything Compass Medical had to offer." Dr. Cohen particularly liked the team approach to patient care. "Compass Medical has a team of highly talented and motivated physicians who work very well together," she says. Dr. Cohen is a family medicine physician who sees patients of all ages. "I thought this model was a great draw for my patients." Technology and Growth Dhrumil Shah, MD, joined Compass Medical in 2010. "I had heard from other doctors that Compass Medical was an integrated primary and family care specialty group — not a multispecialty group — and that was appealing to me," he says. "I was also very impressed with the technology they were using, as well as their dedication to growth and expansion south of Boston." Compass Medical was one of the first primary care organizations in Massachusetts to implement an electronic health records (EHR) system. "The EHR system is an evolving piece of technology that allows us to create a seamless patient experience from physician to physician," Dr. Shah says. Even now, Dr. Shah is helping to lead an initiative to upgrade the group's EHR system with the latest technology and best practices. "Compass Medical has all of the newest technology in place, which allows me to do what I do best: focus on patient care," he says. Dr. Shah became a shareholder in Compass Medical in 2012, giving him an equity stake in the practice. "As a shareholder, I have a say in the key decisions about systemwide initiatives and changes," he says. "Having practicing physicians making these decisions means the focus is always on patient care." "At the end of the day, the goal at Compass Medical is to provide exceptional patient care," Dr. Cohen adds. "They value the relationship I have with my patients, and that is shown in the policies and structure. In today's healthcare climate, with insurance and regulations making lots of demands on doctors and administrators, it is important to be in a place that puts the doctor-patient relationship first, and Compass Medical does that."
